Earwigs of RussiaКожистокрылые (лат. Dermaptera) — отряд насекомых с неполным превращением. Народное название - щипалки. Насчитывается около 2200 видов. Из них в России 34 видов, один из них - викарирующая уховёртка (Forficula vicaria) - в Красной Книге России.
Имеют удлинённое тело; длина тела составляет 3,5-50 мм; на голове большие
глаза, ротовые органы, грызущие и направлены вперед. Усики длинные,
нитевидные, с ясно выраженными члениками. Передние крылья твёрдые и сильно
укорочены (превращены в твёрдые, кожистые надкрылья), задние - перепончатые,
но существуют и бескрылые формы. На конце брюшка имеются придатки в виде
пары клещей - «щипцы», состоящие из двух твердых отростков X сегмента —
церков.
Влаголюбивы и теплолюбивы, ведут преимущественно ночной образ жизни.
Народное поверье, что, заползая в ухо, она может проткнуть барабанную
перепонку, основано на мифах. В Европейской части России и Сибири обычна
огородная уховёртка (Forficula tomis), живёт во влажных местах, дуплах
деревьев, иногда в подвалах. Питается гниющими органическими остатками,
случайно может вредить овощам. Самка заботится о потомстве, устраивая
специальную гнездовую камеру, где сворачивается вокруг кучки яиц. Охраняет и
облизывает яйца, предохраняя их от плесени.
Уховёрток в России часто называют двухвостками, однако настоящие двухвостки
совсем другой отряд насекомых подкласса энтогнатных.
